Rainout Policy

In the event of bad weather - this is our policy:

Get the teams off the field immediately if it appears to you that the weather is or can turn violent at any moment. At a minimum, If you see lightening and the time from flash to bang (thunder) is less than 30 seconds, remove the teams and follow the steps below. By rule, the umpire should call time, "delay" the game*, and remove the teams from the field in the event of bad weather. A period of time of 20 minutes should be observed, before an official decision can be made to suspend a game (an exception to this can be made in the event of violent weather or extremely heavy rains or if so directed by the Commissioner(s) or OH Board Official). A game should also NOT be started under these conditions. The decision to resume a game may be made at any time during the 20 minute count based on the conditions.

1) If the fields are playable (can be worked and the game started in about ten to twenty minutes - this is if there are several games lined up for the day - if this is the last game of the day, more leeway can be given) or the lightening has passed, etc....... resume thegame.

2) If the fields are NOT payable, or there is still lightening, then that game is "stopped".

      a) The game should be "suspended", if it is NOT "official" to be completed at a later date.......... *Have the scorekeeper record game elapsed time (this must be done as soon as you pull the teams from the field, you must stop the game clock), which inning the game is in, who is pitching, who is batting, what the count is and number of outs, and which player is on which base).

      b) Or (in the Fall only at this time) if the game is "official" (after 4 or 3 and 1/2 innings if the home team is ahead in Pinto and Mustang, and after 5 or 4 and 1/2 innings in Bronco and Pony)......., the game is "called" and the score reverts to the score at the end of the previous inning. That game is done, no arguments from the coaches. If a coach gives you a hard time, get his name and his team and report it to me.

Now, under 1) if this should happen in the last of the Saturday or Sunday games or on a week night, there might be some extra time available to prepare the field for replay, observing the 9:00 curfew, in Pinto and Mustang, as applicable. However, if this should happen in the earlier games on Saturday or Sunday, a game can be delayed for the 20 to 30 minutes for one time only, if another delay occurs, that game is "suspended or "called", based on if it is "official" or not, then that game is done, so that day's game schedule can be resumed.

Rainout Pay Policy

If you start a game and it is "suspended" due to weather, email me which game (the time, field and teams) and when it is rescheduled you will get first shot at finishing the game. As we can not pay two people for one game, at this time, the umpire who finishes the game will get paid (it would be nice if the later shares with the former).

If you start the game and it is "called", or ended (game done), you get paid.
Unfortunately, If the game does not start, the league will not pay you, even if you have traveled to do the game.
If you travel to do a game and it has been rescheduled but adequate notice has not been provided by the coaches, you get paid. But notice to you might be through email, so check your email.

Always notify me of anything unusual.
